Subject: Ubuntu 7.10 won't detect my Western Digitals external hd

I was told that ubuntu auto detected hard drives and put them on the desktop like how knoppix worked.

It is detecting your drive just fine. The drive is sdb and it has a partition one it (sdb1). I don't use Gnome or Ubuntu so unfortunatly I can't be any help on why its not mounting it automatically. You might want to search thru the Ubuntu forums for specifics, or maybe another member around here has more experience with it then I do.

Khabi found the correct section of your dmesg, and your drive is indeed being detected. It's an external USB drive, correct? Try doing this: disconnect the drive and cold boot the computer. After Ubuntu has booted, fire up the drive and attach it to the computer. You should, if everything is working correctly, have it mounted automatically. if not, you probably need to create a manual mount point for it. But try the above first and see what happens.
