Have you had any luck since you originally posted this thread? Is there a change or are you still unable to boot live CDs that used to work fine previously?

Live CDs by definition can't change anything on your machine to make the other CDs not work. The errors that you get, what seems to be the problem. Do the graphics not load, or does the system not boot at all, because if you can get to a virtual console (press Alt+Ctrl+F2), and login, you can try the dmesg command to find out the errors.

Run a cd eye cleaner through the cdrom 1st. Philips electronics makes one for about $5.00. You can find it in Walmart if one is located near you.

I have a regular DVD-rom drive and a DVD-burner and same result on both so I dought that it would be a dirty lens.

You might try burning a Slax or Nimblex live cd distro to see if they boot. They are pretty forgiving on Hardware compatability. Just a thought.

It just hit me that your boot stops at date and time check. Go into your bios and make sure the date and time are correct. You can also try resetting your bios to default settings and then go back into bios and reset the boot order section back to cdrom first.

I had a problem with CDs/DVDs not always working in the DVD drive I have. Turned out it was a bad IDE/PATA cable. Try swapping the cable out for a new one or one that you know is fine. Mine had a connector that separated from the cable, but it's possible to have a break in the wire(s) sometimes.

If it is a DVD drive problem, you could try booting from a USB memory stick.

There's a couple of things to check before you go and replace the cable.
1) Do either of the drives work OK in XP ?
2) If they do, have you checked your BIOS to see if it's still set to boot from CD *before* the Hard Drive ? (It may have been set to before, but I've come across a system randomly changing it over night) - the usual ways into the BIOS are to press either the Delete key, F2 or F6, when the system first powers on (though it might be different for you, it should say at the bottom what button to press to get to "Setup").

As an aside, if Windows XP works fine, it's unlikely to be dodgy RAM (XP would've been crashing/BSOD'ing by now if that was the case).

please read carefully original post:
for more infos: my system under win xp run 24/24 and I had no random crash. If it is a (dodgy) RAM I sure would like to know a witch odd adress it is wrong. The default settings of the bios have been tried with no success.sorry but I know well how to boot from CD and all the tried distro do start to boot, they just freeze the process at one point or an other. No my MB revision does not support USB booting, and my 2 dvd drives works fines.a break in at least one of the drive cable maybe but both of them?

Yeah, you changed a piece of hardware or a bios setting. Linux live either boots from cd or it doesn't. It doesn't work 1 sec. and then not work again later. Something has been changed. Did you read Shashank Sharmas post about live cds not being able to change computer settings or hardware and have you tried the dmesg suggestion?
