Subject: usb flashdrive recognition in RH 8.0

I was suprised Redhat 8 was compatible with a new flash drive. I had to mount a directory
Here is what I did

mkdir /mnt/flashdrive

mount -t /dev/sda1 /mnt/flashdrive

Well the actual mount command should also include the filesystem on the device. You actually use the -t switch to inform mount of the filesystem, so a command to mount the device would be like: mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt/flashdrive

Of course, Red Hat 8 is ancient. You should really consider moving to a newer distribution. If you are running a very old machine, there are several distros that are ideal for old hardware, so you can look into that as well. Basically, getting almost all USB devices to work with Linux nowadays just requires the act of plugging them in.

Cheers!

well anyway, if it has been used with windows before it may have been formatted using NTFS so you might not be able to read or write.
Are you using it just for linux or both windows and linux???
