The Open Source Business Conference (OSCON) was held last Friday in Vienna. Danese Cooper, a proponent of Open Source at Sun Microsystems, spoke about what she had seen in India: a large section of the economy was working solely on applying standard software and linking various standard components to each other. “Visual Studio is one of the companies created for this purpose. But that is not creative work. India has built up a gigantic software industry, but it is one that almost invents nothing compared to other sectors of the economy. Cooper feels that Open Source and the creativity it allows for are the way to go.
