For Eblis Parera, e-mail was a time drain. The three PCs in his office that run the Microsoft Windows operating system each had anti-virus software and firewalls running to keep out spam and viruses. But Parera still found himself screening hundreds of messages in the corporate inbox for spam, viruses and other “malware,” or malicious software.
In Parera’s case, one e-mail virus that came in through Outlook attacked the system, sending hundreds of messages to other users throughout his company, Turkel Advertising in Coconut Grove. It was a “spam-generating monster,” he recalled.
