Cloning a HDD But Not the OS

I am trying to clone over my laptop hard drive using hdd_rescue since it has crashed. I want to copy everything BUT the operating system. Is there any way to do this? Thanks ahead of time.

If the HDD crashed its better to try and extract as much data as you can, including the OS. That raises your chances of recovering as much personal data as possible. Did you try using the DD command yet?

There is no way to clone a HDD without the OS. That is what cloning is, making an exact copy of the source. You will be able to figure out where the OS starts and ends on the drive. IF you just want the data, then use a recovery software that can read EXT file systems and recover only the data.
