Help installing Linux Mint

Trying to install linux mint 17.1 on a compaq presario with a 1.3 ghz processor, 512 ram, 120GB hard drive. when I boot from the live cd, I get the title screen where it starts to count down. If I just try to run mint I get a little gray square in the upper left of the corner. If I start mint in compatibility mode, it will boot up but it gives me "running in software rendering mode, no video hardware acceleration may need to update drivers" so i tried to install mint to update the drivers it gets to partitioning the hard drive and locks up. Is there a way to update the drivers before installing or is there something else that I need to do. If anyone could help me I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Your processor does support 64bit, so that isn't the issue. I have seen problems when trying to install both Mint and Zorin if you select the encryption of your home directory or a partition during installation. You can select that later if need be.

Also, I've had issues before if the partitions were in previously in use by some other OS. Use FDISK, gpartd or some other disk manager and delete and format the partition that you want to instsll Mint on. That's usually solved these types of issues for me.
