I think the first thing I would do is find out which Linux distribution is on the computer and then go to that distro's website and search for similar issues. Search for 'Acer' 'notebook' 'wifi' (if it is a wireless problem) or 'lan' for your cable modem...

The interesting and frustrating things about Linux are that YOU (meaning the user) need to spend a little time and effort and be ready to do a little investigation. 99% of the answers are out there in some blog / forum or someone's website. It is just up to the user to think about it and hone the question so that others can help or direct one to some info that may be helpful.

Being willing to learn and explore is considered a plus when it comes to Linux.
