installing windows over linux damages the bootloader.you have to update the bootloader.most linux distros( eg fedora) offer bootloader updating functionality.what distro are you using?

In my experience Windows in general is unfriendly to anything not windows....

In my experience Windows in general is unfriendly to anything not windows. When you installed Windows 7 it either formatted over your linux partition or it is simply ignoring your linux partition all together on boot up. What i have had to do in the past is install something like partition manager or boot magic which will recognize the bootable partitions despite what windows says.
