secure your data and applications (mint has a tool for that outside of your compu. Then take the DVD with the distro and install it on the clean hard drive (the first option, or as it written above). The installer will show you the way. But I wonder a little bit about your question, because Clem has explained it on the Mint website. The Mint editions are always fresh installations.
After the installation you can play back your data and applications with the same tool.
Do not, I repeat not, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
Then you could have a mixture, that doesn't work properly. And download and read the Mint user guide.

wish you luck

Hello Daner - my suggestion is to backup your data and perform a fresh installation of Linux Mint 17. If you do not want to or cannot, then you should try this command:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This will do a distribution upgrade. I do not think it will be successful since Mint 11 is years behind Mint 17 so I repeat my recommendation to install Mint 17 Cinnamon. Also, when you partition your disk, create 4 partitions:

/dev/sda1 : main OS
/dev/sda2 : alternate OS
/dev/sda3 : personal data / home
/dev/sda4 : swap

This way you can separate your data from the distributions and also install a new distribution without disturbing the current one.

Good luck -- MC
