It's pretty simple. Create some bootable media (DVD or USB flash drive) of your Linux distribution of choice and boot to that media. I recommend Linux Lite (www.linuxliteos.com). When you boot to the media, you'll be put into an environment called a Live CD. This allows you to play with the operating system before you install it. You can check to see if you can connect to your printer, what programs are included by default, and you can even browse the internet from this Live CD environment. You can investigate all this without installing the operating system.

When you're ready to install, just click on the installation icon on the desktop. The procedure is very straightforward. The Linux distro I prefer even has a well documented Installation Guide seen here: https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/.
