Install after XP

I want to completely get rid of xp, but after several attempts I have to reload xp, I keep getting errors or the screen locks up and nothing works, also I've tried portioning and leaving windows on but can't get partions to work, comp. just says can't partion. Anyway what version of Linux should I try on an older laptop?

I would try Linux Mint or Zorin, both pretty intuitive to a Windows user....

Reload or reinstall XP? I'm not sure what's going on from the information provided. Were you initally trying to set up a dual boot system?

When I decided to get rid of Windows, I just went whole hog. I use Slackware from the CD set (v.14.1 currently). My experience is solely with desktops though, I have never owned a laptop. I just deleted the old Windows partition and created new Linux partitions using fdisk, then went ahead with the full installation.
