Is it possible to combine two computers hardisk as one?

Hello,.. i wanted to know if its possible to combine two computers hard disk as one; that is Pc A with hard disk 40 GB and Pc B with hard disk 60 GB.. Can we "combine' these two computers in a network in order to get a single partition or a shared partition of Pc(40gb) +Pc( 60gb) =Virtual pc(100GB)?any advice will be helpful Thank you.

I'm assuming neither of these would be your non-system disk, and are auxiliary data drives. It can be done that way, but it would be best to do it during the OS install, in that case. Many mainstream Linux OS installers support this already.

So to answer your question, yes, that can be done. What you are talking about is creating a RAID. A RAID of disk drives can be achieved in either software or hardware. To do a RAID with hardware, you'd have to purchase a RAID Controller card that you'd install into a PCI slot on the motherboard of your PC. Then when you first boot up the PC, you would go into some sort of low-level menu (like a BIOS) where you could set up the hardware raid (i.e., assign both disks to an array). Then when you save/quit that utility and boot your actual OS (we assume some sort of Linux), you'd just have to make sure that the drivers for the card are already supported by the kernel (they usually are) or you'd have to install them. Then you'd have access to your drive and could partition it (e.g. /dev/sda1).

In your case, though, I'd recommend a software RAID. The two most common ones for Linux are LVM and Mdadm. Support for both is probably built into your Linux OS already (and if not, packages will be readily available). I find Mdadm to be easier to use than LVM, but that's just personal preference. Both will do what you want, though: combine two drives into one larger one. You would then create your partitions and format them with your filesystem of choice.
