Answer to the question

I know this is an older question, but we just published a guide to Linux laptops and it would be a great fit for someone that finds this.

You can actually buy a Linux laptop. Perfect for beginners, as all providers offer support and you get the laptop pre-installed with a distro of your choice. There are all kinds of options in terms of performance, size, and price.

Congratulations on your selection of Linux mint. Along with Ubuntu, Mint is most often recommended for new users.

Any older laptop is most suitable. The problem with newer computers is that they often require newer drivers, which may take a year or two to filter down to the current Linux distributions. Also, the warrantee on a new computer may be voided by the installation of Linux. That is what a local retailer told a friend of mine.
