The info at http://www.linlap.com/acer_aspire_5536 has "no comment" on the atheros b/g wifi card in your acer laptop. Although, they report good luck with the b/g/n version. One solution is to plug in a usb wifi adapter and see if you do better. The command "lsusb" will show what chipset you have. I have good luck with those using the ralink and realtek chipsets. Mint should already have the driver modules installed.

Another approach is to use the windows drivers for your internal wifi card instead of the Linux drivers. This requires ndiswrapper to be installed in Mint. Search on "ndiswrapper" for information on how to install the windows drivers.
