A NIS Server running on Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 works well.
The ypserv package is part of the RHEL Distribution, but
you should use CentOS if you do not have a paid subscription to Redhat. I recommend having one NIS Server, Master or Slave, per 50 NIS Clients. The server does not have to be dedicated, but must have available CPU and memory resources at all times. A dedicated 2 CPU @ 3 GHz x 2 GB of RAM box is more then adequate to use for a NIS Master or NIS Slave .
