What is the best linux os to replace my current system?

I have a Dell Dimension E520 with Windows XP Sp3 with Pent D Smithfield for desktops. It has a 350GB hard drive. I want to install a Linux OS to replace Win XP. What is the best OS Ubuntu etc... to use. I am new to Linux and this is an unused computer. I would like to experiment, mess around with Linux to learn.
