What distro will work best on this old laptop?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5025 (AMD Turion II Dual-Core M520 2.3GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, ATI Radeon HD 4200) that I'm trying to breathe life into again with Linux. i tried Ubuntu 14.04, but the hardware is too old and it acts glitchy. so, i switched over to Xubuntu 14.04 and it seems to work fine so far, but i wanted another opinion.

I would try Kanotix ....

Not sure why it would act glitchy. That machine has plenty of power and ram. Might be a driver issue. I've had no problems with either Mint or Zorin on any Toshiba, Dell or Lenovo that I've installed them on. Get it a shot and see if it works for you.

I have a very similar machine and I've also gone this road. Ubuntu started acting up with no particular reason (No big updates or anything). Formatted the machine and moved to Xubuntu with pretty OK results but still something was missing. I found a couple of distros that were lighter but i liked the most one called Elementary OS. It has a pretty clean desktop look and feel, maybe you can give it a try. Now, if that doesn't work for you i have another option: Arch Linux or Manjaro Linux (Based on Arch with graphical installer). I've gone in and out on this one but I've found that it totally brings old hardware back to life. Give it a go and let us know what worked for you.

Linux Lite and any one of the Zorin OS options are great choices to consider.
