You might be best served by using a 32-bit version of Lubuntu(if you'd like to stay within the Ubuntu family). You could certainly try a non-GUI distro since that would have the least impact on the system's resources. Just make sure that your computer can handle the requirements of the distro you choose and that you're proficient in using the command line.

With the specs on that machine, I would stick with some of the "light"...

With the specs on that machine, I would stick with some of the "light" distributions like Elementary, Puppy, ARCH, Lubuntu or Ubuntu MATE.
Do a Google search for "light weight Linux" and see which one appeals to you.
