An ".exe" file is Windows native, which you probably already knew. There is a Windows emulator called "wine" which you could try. It is a work in progress, but I have had fair luck with it.
Of course the best answer is to find a Linux package that does the job of the Windows program you are trying to open. Linux has packages to cover most categories of software.

Very simple.... Install WINE (which is free) or if cost is no matter, then go for CrossOver. Of course CrossOver is more reliable than WINE.

WINE. It allows you to run most windows programs on linux. You can also search there to see if the program will run on it.

*.exe files are windows binaries so you are going to need Wine to run the things, here is the project page:

http://www.winehq.org/

You should be able to install with a simple:

sudo apt-get install wine

and here you can see how to install/use windows programs:

I have never had much luck or interest in running windows applications in Linux, in my opinion your far better off learning how to do the things you need natively using Linux applications, see this link for more of a clue:

You will have to install wine from the Linux Mint software repository. But you have to be sure that the Windows software you are trying to run is on the Wine compatibility listing.
