Why will only boot in recovery mode?

if i let it boot normal it just stall and will not do anything.

Sounds like you are missing the bootloader, more likely grub....

Sounds like you are missing the bootloader, more likely grub.

First we need to know what Linux system you are using.

You can install a bootloader(grub, if that is what you are using) to the mbr of your hard drive (normally). Insert your bootdisk, boot into live mode.

Open a terminal, and type:

sudo chroot <path to your harddrive>
sudo grub install <path to the physical device or partition>
sudo update-grub

This works on ubuntu 14.04.
