As I have NEVER owned a computer I haven't built myself, this is an easy question for me to answer; Most distros do as well or better than Windows in detecting your hardware. Further, since the need for anti-malware software is not nearly as great under Linux, a more modest system running Linux will outperform a more robust system running Windows with the required anti-malware software.
I'm not militantly anti-Windows, but I'd much rather run a linux machine.
Between the wealth of programs in most repositories, and the ease of finding a distro which suits your needs, why on earth would you pay for a boated, insecure OS??

Linux should have no problem running on most any computer. As far as existing software, that depends. Is it Windows software, then a lot of windows programs can be run under Wine with good results. A better alternative is to choose some of the thousands of open source programs that run natively to replace the function of the Windows app.
