Julie Miller writes “Berkeley, California – Apress L.P. is pleased to announce the creation of the Apress eBookshop. Earlier in 2005, Apress launched the “Free eBook†series. This is a continually growing collection of essential titles, including A Programmer’s Introduction to PHP 4.0, that Apress offers its readers for free. With hundreds of copies of its books being downloaded on a daily basis, Apress is seizing the opportunity by offering IT professionals worldwide a variety of ways to stay at the forefront of technology.

Apress is launching the eBookshop with several incentives, including a minimum of a 50% discount on all titles, a one-time 75% discount to members on a single eBook, tie-ins with partner companies, trade-show promotions, tell-a-friend bonuses and ongoing specials. An eBook is a valuable companion to an indispensable reference book; offered in PDF format, it is searchable, portable, convenient and affordable.

Within 10 days of the soft launch of Apress’ eBookshop, research indicated that substantial sales were generated from non-U.S. programmers, including South African, Korean, Australian, Japanese, and European buyers. Apress was also pleased to learn that approximately 20% of eBook customers purchased multiple titles. Titles downloaded are representative of the leading technologies in Apress’ catalog:.NET, PHP, open-source Java, robotics, and database. With the eBookshop’s official launch on May 2, 2005, the number of downloads has dramatically increased, both domestically and internationally.

According to Apress publisher and co-founder Gary Cornell, “While I’m a ‘dead tree’ kind of guy, lots of our customers have moved beyond me. I’m pleased Apress is now able to support them! And even I realize that having an eBook version of one of our titles is a very useful companion to the physical book.â€
