Asia seeks to log off Microsoft

BEIJING – Officials from China, Japan and South Korea are to meet in Beijing today to map out plans to promote the Linux computer-operating system and other ”open-source” software as alternatives to the products of the US software giant Microsoft.

The meeting reflects deep concern in Asia over the virtual monopoly enjoyed by Microsoft’s Windows operating system and its Office suite of software.

Officials are hoping that its grip on the market can be challenged in the region by Linux.
