Previous releases of Athene required X11, but the new release has no such dependency. Athene includes an X compatibility server so that you can continue running your X11 applications in the Athene desktop. Using VESA instead of X11 means that applications get direct access to the video display, giving them a huge boost in speed and user responsiveness.”
