Chris Lanier on Microsoft, DRM, and Content Protection

11
No one wants Microsoft to die, but I think consumers don’t want to lose the freedoms they are accustomed to in order to playback DRM-protected content. I, for one, would rather use a secured device like TiVo and keep my PC functioning and configured the way I want. In the future, I don’t want to worry that my PC won’t boot or will be crippled if I decide to change some hardware that in Microsoft’s eyes will be considered “unsecured”. If that’s not possible, Linux will look like a compelling alternative for commonplace tasks (as mentioned above), which is 90% + of what most people use their computers for.
