CoreOS and Google are today announcing a new project, Tectonic, which aims to offer an alternative stack for those wanting to build container-based infrastructure. There is much positioning at play here that is important to understand.

There is a new battle looming in the IT infrastructure space, and it all revolves around a new way of packaging applications. The concept of containers, first popularized on Linux, has existed for a long time. Docker is a new project that has taken these Linux Containers and reinvigorated them for a web-scale world. Some suggest that containers generally, and Docker in particular, fundamentally threatens the vendors who make their money out of virtualization. In particular VMware is held up as one company that may well be disrupted.
