The march to faster microprocessors, more random-access memory, and larger volumes of hard disk storage has been relentless. After software suppliers design applications to take advantage of ever-improving hardware, network equipment vendors have to keep pace by adding more bandwidth. With local area networks, that has not been difficult, and corporations have deployed 100M bps — and even 1G bps — links to the desktop.
