InfoWorld (via CNN) reports on the new online financial marketing rules agreed upon by the Council of Ministers of the European Union. Unsolicited commercial e-mail will be banned — if users want the information, they have to ask for it first, and businesses will no longer be allowed to use inertia marketing. That particular marketing strategy involves sending consumers unsolicited products and charging them for the use of those products if they don’t respond and/or return the product within a certain period of tiem. Similar regulations for other markets are expected to follow.
