The FUD Report: Don’t look this way!

Chuck Talk writes “On the home front, we have a several-pronged attack underway to lead the gullible to the well of fear, uncertainty and doubt. It seems that sometimes the media just cannot help themselves in the headlong rush to ignore reality in favor of sensationalism. Although I bear no malice toward the author, I feel that he has missed some of the key aspects of reality in seeking a position from whence to defend the SCO Groups trial by media.

I do take offense at the description of Linux users and developers as cultists, for we are no more cultists than the group of people who buy Kenmore refrigerators or Maytag washers and dryers. The simple fact is that we have decided to purchase an item that works for our needs.

The implication that anyone who works for a living and uses open source or free software in their development plans is a cultist is merely using the technique of reductio ad absurdum. In other words, the argument is reduced to the level of the absurd. The idea, although making for great fish wrapper, has little practical value; it is designed to have emotional appeal.”
