Garage Mechanics, Open Source and Tools

25
As mechanics who do things for ourselves, we often gravitate toward open source tools. Linux provides us a range of access to tool crafter by others,
and the ability to easily make our own if we’re so inclined.

Many of the mechanical wizards who pop through here seem to be Linux proponents, and I’ll occasionally take on the devil’s advocate role. But in
truth, I’m not an OS mechanic at all these days. My focus has long been the network, the highway, the infrastructure. When you’re building networks
for performance and economy, IIS vs. Apache is a non-issue. When you’re optimizing frame relay networks to run efficiently over 32K PVCs, Star Office
and MS Office become irrelevant. Tools are tools wherever they come from. with good reasons for each.
