Google’s “other” stat clarifies OS install

Kelly McNeill writes “A few weeks ago osViews broke the news that Google had discontinued operating system statistics from the search engine’s zeitgeist web-search analysis service. The OS stat included a peculuar statistic labeled as “other” which was greater than the combined Macintosh, Linux and Windows 95 groups. Certinly the more obscure OSes not represented in the Google statistic (even combined) couldn’t be greater than these three OSes. After doing some comparative research, I now believe that the “other” statistic represents a combination of Macintosh and Linux users that were not accounted for in zeitgeist and are also not being accounted for in other log analysis software packages.”
