IEEE Inadvertently Forcing Consumers to Adopt Alternate 802.11g Standard

Eric peterson writes “Earlier this week, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (aka. IEEE) finally approved an official standard for 802.11g. Unfortunately, the new standard is one third the speed that was previously promised by the organization.

Before the standard had been finalized, many companies including linksys, Apple, DLink along with many others shipped wireless networking hardware at the anticipated speed of 54Mbit per second. Now, IEEE has reduced the official throughput speeds to 10M and 20Mbit/sec in an effort to retain maximum compatibility with 802.11b.”
