Indian IT ministry meet may open doors to the GNU

Navin Dhanuka writes “Last fortnight, the IT ministry conducted a high-power meeting in Delhi during which academics, CEOs and bureaucrats came together to discuss the free software movement. Things have been happening for a long time at the ground level, says journalist Frederick Noronha, one of the earliest converts to GNU/LINUX. That it has not been noticed by official circles is another matter. Little wonder then that hackers, luggers and their keyboard-dependent ilk were thrilled by this official recognition, especially because it came on the heels of Bill Gates dollar-dispensing visit, which many saw as the death of free software in the country.”
