Starting at the Technology Trigger, up to the Peak of Inflated Expectations, down to the Trough of Disillusionment and back up the Slope of Enlightenment, finally ending at the Plateau of Productivity; Gartner’s Hype Cycle has become an industry standard for rating the maturity of a specific technology. Its latest chart shows Linux performing rather well in some aspects – already on the plateau for infrastructure services. Other uses of Linux – such as on 16- to 64-way machines or in mission critical environments – are just starting to head up the curve.
