Sun’s Java Desktop Stack is due to go on sale on December 10, priced at about $197 per user per year.

Sun New Zealand partner SolNet had begun promoting the software to government users, before Sun terminated its relationship with the company last week.

Sun Australasia managing director Jim Hassell expects other resellers will pick up the mantle.

The CD comprises SuSE Linux and Sun’s Star Office 7.0 desktop application suite, which includes a Mozilla Web browser, an e-mail client, a Java runtime environment and an instant messaging application as well as desktop productivity tools and calendar software.

The disk is designed to provide a complete open source alternative to Microsoft’s Windows, Office, Outlook and Internet Explorer software.
