Linus Torvalds, the originator and coordinator of the Linux kernel, has halted development of kernel version 2.6 to prepare it for release by year’s
end. According to news reports, several large vendors are waiting for this new version to stabilize and plan to release their 2.6-aided versions in
the first half of next year. This release promises to address many of the weaknesses in the 2.4 kernel and fold in support for technologies that have
been developed since its last release.
