Ev Milker writes “There will be Penguins over the White Cliffs of Dover – LinuxIT and Mandriva build Linux bridges across Europe.

LinuxIT, the largest Linux company providing independent systems integration and professional services in the UK, today announced that it is responding to increasing demand in the public sector for Linux tools with the supply and support of specifically designed solutions. The company has joined forces with Mandriva (formerly known as Mandrakesoft), the creators of the Mandrakelinux distribution, to actively promote and support Mandriva Corporate Server 3.0 and Pulse, a network deployment and management solution.

Simon Mitchell, Sales Director of LinuxIT, said: “LinuxIT will make the solutions available at a discounted public sector rate in order to enable the agencies and institutions in the UK to benefit as soon as possible. The company will also offer deployment support and maintenance for Mandriva’s Solutions.”

In recent months, government agencies and public institutions in the UK have opened up to the opportunity to adopt Linux-based systems and solutions. These applications offer scalable, efficient and cost-effective alternatives to proprietary software for bureaus that are famously under-funded. Especially for public bodies that handle confidential and sensitive information, the proven security of Linux based solutions is another important factor when deciding on an appropriate IT solution.

The popularity of Linux in the public sector has grown, although the UK is more cautious than other European countries including France and Germany, where governments have installed large scale Linux systems in recent months.

Mandriva’s solutions are being used in 140 countries by more than 7 million users, and the company has played a leading role in deploying Linux based solutions in the public sector. The company’s flag ship solutions Corporate Server 3.0 and Pulse are the result of several years experience in the critical server applications field. Corporate Server 3.0 is based on the latest Linux Kernel 2.6, features SMP and hyper-threading architectures as well as x86 and x86-64 architectures. Mandriva’s Pulse deployment and management solution brings the control of a heterogeneous computer network back to the IT department. Especially important to under-funded public institutions, the deployment of Pulse considerably reduces the management costs of any IT environment by providing a central management console for OS and application deployment across different hardware platforms and operating systems.

Francois Bancilhon, Chief Executive Officer at Mandriva, comments: “Government agencies across Europe are relying on our solutions and already benefit from outstanding robustness, scalability, reliability, and ease of use. Through a closer partnership between LinuxIT and Mandriva, we are hoping to push the UK public sector a step further towards the adoption of Linux based solutions, and to bring it onto the same level as its continental counterparts.”
