Linux's growth gathers most speed among Japan packaged OSes
"According to recently published results by IDC Japan, the Japan packaged operating system (OS) software market exceeded 329 billion yen in 2001, and is forecast to grow to more than 384 billion yen in 2006. Comparing OS platforms by share, Windows continued to be the dominant OS in Japan, capturing almost 57% of total packaged OS revenues in 2001, and it is expected to grow to 72% of the Japan market by 2006. Linux will consistently be the fastest growing platform in Japan with an expected compound average growth rate (CAGR) of 25.3% from 2001-2006, among the eight primary OS segments that IDC follows. The total Japan packaged OS software market is currently being forecast at a fairly modest five-year CAGR of 3.1%."
