Linux Mandrake: Some Aesthetic Observations. A writer points out some interesting parallels between Windows XP and Mandrake Linux that he discovered while installing WinXP on his PC: "The first thing that popped up that made me think about this parallel during the set up was the Network Connection Wizard built into the tail end of the set up process. Of course, XP being as new as it is, has a very large database of native drivers for NICs, so odds are that XP is going to find your NIC while it's installing itself on the PC...much like Mandrake 8.0 currently does." http://www.systemlogic.net/agurusworld/19/ Slashdot also held a discussion on this same topic: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/08/06/1322219&mode=thread&threshold=1 What's Cooking at MandrakeSoft? ---------------------------------------- Mandrake Linux PPC "Release Candidate" now available. The final Mandrake Linux PPC beta is now available for downloading; this is your last chance to test this new port of Mandrake Linux 8.0 and report any bugs and/or suggestions. The Release Candidate contains the following changes from the previous beta: * Improved modem detection. * Reworked CD boot scheme to accommodate newer machines. * Post-install X configuration via XFdrake. * Reworked installer to accommodate "OldWorld" machines and alternate bootloader setups. * Reworked installer to accommodate complicated partition map setups. * Security updates. * Added kernel 2.4.4 with PPC specific patches for video drivers. * Patched xmms for wave/mp3 files. * Many other changes based on Beta user feedback. For information on how to get involved, please see the PPC Beta FAQ: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/PPC/FAQ/ To participate as a beta tester, please subscribe to the PPC mailing list by sending an email to sympa@linux-mandrake.com with the words "SUB cooker-ppc" in the body of the message. -- The Mandrake Cooker is now in a period called "feature freeze" -- during this period no new packages are added to Cooker, only bug fixes are worked on in preparation for the upcoming 8.1 Beta cycle. Business Case of the Week ---------------------------------------- Devine Entertainment Corp. and Mandrake 8.0. "We're a small but successful film company here in Toronto (5 Emmy's and counting!) with about 10 regular users on 10 workstations (8 desktop, 2 laptop). I've been using Mandrake since September of 2000, and it was my first foray into the world of Linux OS. Prior to this I've used Windows 9.x which we regularly use on our workstations here." http://www.mandrakebizcases.com/article.php?sid=138&mode=thread&order=0 Read many more examples of Mandrake Linux in the workplace at: http://www.MandrakeBizCases.com/ If you use MandrakeSoft products in your business, please share your story by submitting your own personal "Bizcase".
