I think the most significant change in the software industry has been the adoption of the trend toward open-source software. Open-source software is turning the industry upside-down and forcing vendors to reconsider their position and strategies. The notion that software is no longer proprietary is hard to swallow when, traditionally, the software itself has been the compelling reason for someone to buy it. Open sourcing now forces software companies to deliver services and expertise with less emphasis on the software code. From an industry perspective, this is a gigantic change.
