Kelly McNeill writes “Microsoft Corp. released the latest version of its Internet Explorer as a free download Monday in anticipation of the release of its Windows XP operating system. The new version, IE 6.0, will be included on every machine running Windows XP. Although the new browser adds features that enable users to more easily play music and videos, Microsoft is generating controversy for features that IE 6.0 lacks. The new IE has dropped support for rival browser Netscape, Apple Computer’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) QuickTime, and Java plug-ins, in favor of its proprietary Active X technology.”
