Simply put, if you’re on one chat network and a friend is on another, chatting is impossible without jumping through several hoops.

As of last Thursday, some of those incompatibility woes will be gone… (at least to some degree.) Microsoft managed to negotiate a semblance of compatibility between the two other primary IM players.
