Microsoft’s Submission Terms to Ecma

Andy Updegrove writes “I have received a copy of the terms upon which Microsoft has submitted its XML Reference Schema to Ecma for “standardization.” Well, that is if you consider a rubberstamp to be standardization. The terms only allow the adoption, without change, of the Schema in order to “Guarantee continuous use of the existing base of Microsoft Office documents without losing any of the functionalities,” with no mention of accommodating the needs of any other vendor, any other end user, or any other needs not met by Office. I’m told the vote will be taken this Thursday. Will the other Ecma members let this pass?”
