Mobile WiMAX Base Stations to Integrate HA DBMS

Ted Kenney writes “McObject announced that SOMA Networks, a leading provider of mobile WiMAX technology, will incorporate McObject’s eXtremeDB™ High Availability (HA) in-memory embedded database in its award-winning FlexMAX™ Mobile WiMAX System.

Within FlexMAX base stations, eXtremeDB-HA will run on embedded Linux and on Wind River Systems’ VxWorks real-time operating system, providing real-time, fault-tolerant storage and retrieval of network traffic routing data.

In SOMA Networks’ pre-development testing, the eXtremeDB-HA embedded database outperformed other database alternatives, SOMA Networks engineers said. On average, as the number of data elements increased, so did eXtremeDB-HA’s performance edge, they said. In exhaustive testing, engineers achieved transactions-per-second throughput that met the real-time performance needs of SOMA Networks’ customer premises telecommunications equipment.

“SOMA Networks chose to embed a commercial database in its device to seamlessly manage the large volumes of complex data that underlie advanced communications system features,” stated Scott Woodworth, SOMA’s senior vice-president of manufacturing and operations. “The McObject product’s all-in-memory responsiveness, and its intuitive C/C++ application programming interface, drove the choice of eXtremeDB-HA.”

“eXtremeDB-HA’s proven high availability sub-system is an ideal fit for products such as SOMA’s FlexMAX Mobile WiMAX System that require carrier-grade reliability in all critical software and hardware components,” McObject CEO Steve Graves said.

“eXtremeDB-HA meets this demand via deployment of multiple fully synchronized eXtremeDB databases within the same hardware device or across multiple, widely distributed systems. With synchronous (2-safe) and asynchronous (1-safe) replication, and a host of other options, developers have the flexibility to configure eXtremeDB-HA to exactly match requirements,” Graves said.

WiMAX, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is described by the industry group WiMAX Forum as “a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to wired broadband like cable and DSL.” WiMAX “will provide fixed, nomadic, portable and mobile wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight with a base station,” according to the group, and “has been incorporated in notebook computers and PDAs, allowing for urban areas and cities to become `MetroZones’ for portable outdoor broadband wireless access.”

SOMA Networks’ FlexMAX Mobile WiMAX System is a complete broadband wireless system portfolio that allows carriers to offer high-margin applications and a superior subscriber experience to residential and SoHo consumers though service providers, worldwide. Advanced antenna technologies allow for the widest coverage area and maximum revenue, while enabling low market entry and expansion costs. The FlexMAX System includes base stations, multiple types of mobile station devices, advanced multi-antenna processing, traffic management middleware, integrated applications, network management and network gateways — all backed by world-class partners, global field support and professional services.
