Annette Oevermann writes “SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 11, 2004 — MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced the appointment of Kelly Herrell as the company’s new senior vice president of Strategic Operations. In this role, Mr. Herrell will guide corporate business strategy and operationalize growth opportunities.

Mr. Herrell has more than 15 years of management experience with high technology companies. His background includes open source and proprietary software, hardware and networking, and addresses markets that include enterprise, telecommunications and service providers. Prior to joining MontaVista, Herrell was a senior executive at Cobalt Networks (formerly Nasdaq: COBT, later acquired by Sun), the leading maker of Linux-based server appliances. Previously, he was a senior executive at CacheFlow (Nasdaq: BCSI), the head of worldwide marketing for Oracle’s database products, and director of strategy for the large systems division of AT&T Global Information Solutions.

“Kelly has proven abilities to identify market opportunities for disruptive technologies,” said Jim Ready, CEO and president, MontaVista Software. “He has an impressive track record and we are eager to tap into his vision and expertise as our company continues to grow.”

“As a company, MontaVista has demonstrated two important proof-points that I believe will propel its growth,” said Kelly Herrell. “While MontaVista Linux is already proven as an alternative to the proprietary system software used in the traditional embedded systems market, it also addresses a larger market — specifically, networked devices. These devices, ranging from carrier-grade core network equipment to consumer-grade devices on the network edge, represent tremendous growth potential in the market for embedded system software. I look forward to helping MontaVista capitalize on these opportunities, and am delighted to be part of the team.”

Mr. Herrell graduated from Cornell University with a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA).
