ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 2, 2004 MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced that it is a founding strategic member of Eclipse, which recently reorganized as an independent not-for-profit corporation. Eclipse, originally a consortium formed when IBM placed the Eclipse Platform into Open Source, has now evolved into an independent body. MontaVista CEO Jim Ready will serve on the board of directors and help provide guidance and direction to the Eclipse Management Organization.

Eclipse creates an industry-standard platform for development, which is open source and vendor-neutral. It allows integration of disparate tools that have not necessarily been tested together, said Skip McGaughey, spokesperson for Eclipse. With its strong commitment to
open source and expertise as a provider of development platforms and tools for embedded Linux applications, MontaVista Software will continue to be a great asset to the Eclipse community.

Eclipse is a prestigious open source community, which brings together the broad range of software tools developers and providers helping to build, refine and promote high-quality shared software technology. MontaVista Software has been an active member and contributor to Eclipse since 2002.

“MontaVista Software has proudly demonstrated its commitment to Eclipse, by adopting it as a strategic development framework, through founding membership in Eclipse, and with contributions to Eclipse technology, commented Jim Ready, CEO and president, MontaVista Software. “MontaVista Software strongly believes in the benefits of Open Source and looks forward to continue being part of this initiative.”

MontaVista recently announced MontaVista DevRocket 1.0, a fully integrated and graphical development
environment (IDE) based on Eclipse technology. DevRocket provides a common look-and-feel across development host platforms including Windows, Solaris and Linux, allowing all developers on a project to share the same toolset, irrespective of the hosts they are using. With unique MontaVista Linux integration and powerful tool extensions, MontaVista DevRocket will dramatically improve embedded software developer productivity and decrease time to market for their products. MontaVista will demonstrate the new DevRocket IDE at the companys booth at the EclipseCon show this week.

MontaVista Software is a Silver sponsor of and is participating in the EclipseCon first annual technical conference (Monday, Feb. 2nd, to Thursday, Feb. 5th), in Anaheim, Calif. MontaVista will also present a session titled Tux in Tool-land: Building an Eclipse-based development environment for Embedded Linux on Thu. Feb. 5, at 2 pm, at the conference.

About Eclipse

Eclipse has formed an independent open
ecosystem of royalty-free technology and a universal platform for tools integration. Eclipse-based tools give developers freedom of choice in a multi-language, multi-platform, multi-vendor supported environment. Eclipse delivers a plug-in based framework that makes it easier to create, integrate and use software tools, saving time and money. By collaborating and sharing core integration technology, tool producers can concentrate on their areas of expertise and the creation of new development technology. The Eclipse Platform is written in the Java(tm) language, and comes with extensive plug-in construction toolkits and examples. It has already been deployed on a range of development workstations including Linux®-, QNX®-, OSx®- and Windows®-based systems. Full details of the Eclipse community and white papers documenting the design of the Eclipse Platform are available at http://www.eclipse.org.
