SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 31, 2003 MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced the immediate availability of MontaVista Linux® Consumer Electronics Edition (CEE) 3.0. CEE is the first quality Linux operating system and cross-development environment specifically designed for consumer electronics devices such as mobile phones, advanced PDAs, digital televisions, set-top boxes and automotive telematics.

MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition enhances Linux with dynamic power management, rich consumer-focused networking support and consumer-grade reliability. It is designed specifically to address the needs of consumer electronics device manufacturers. CEE targets consumer device-specific processors and the initial release will support TI OMAP1510 and OMAP5910 applications processors. Linux support packages for the IBM PowerPC 405LP and other platforms will be available in the future.

Based on the 2.4.20 Linux kernel, CEE 3.0 incorporates DPM (Dynamic Power Management), support for XIP (eXecute In Place) of the kernel and applications, streaming media optimizations, the O(1) real-time scheduler and new MontaVista graphical tools to measure system performance, timing and memory size. CEE also features bundled, power-management enabled, driver support for peripherals including digital camera, IrDA, SD/MMC cards and USB.

MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition, based on MontaVista-licensed as well as open source software, is application-compatible with and incorporates all the benefits of the MontaVista flagship systems software product, MontaVista Linux Professional Edition. CEE includes the fully preemptible MontaVista Linux kernel and real-time scheduling, small footprint targets and flash-based journaling file systems.

Surging Industry Adoption

Hundreds of consumer electronics products are already in development using MontaVista Linux, including mobile phones, PDAs, advanced remote controls, high definition televisions, HDTV, PVRs, set-top boxes, digital receivers, automotive telematics, musical instruments, gaming machines and karaoke systems. Recently, Sony and NEC released new consumer products built on MontaVista Linux. Several leading manufacturers such as Motorola are also currently building next generation mobile phones based on MontaVista Linux. Companies such as Netherlands-based Zintec Holding and Araneo in Israel have also chosen MontaVista Linux for their digital television market products. Several MontaVista customers have already started development of devices based on MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition 3.0.
