SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 10, 2003 MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution today announced that MontaVista® Linux® Professional Edition is the chosen operating system (OS) for Sharp Corporations (TS:6753) HG-01S (also known as Galileo), a home digital information server. The HG-01S is the core product in Sharps vision of a connected ubiquitous home network, and can be connected to devices such as PCs, mobile phones, and TVs.

We chose MontaVista Linux to build this new type of home entertainment platform, because we needed a systems software platform that provides PC server level security, coupled with sophisticated networking capabilities to deliver high performance in a reliable manner, said Makoto Nakamura, Division General Manager of Mobile computing system division, Information and Communication systems group, Sharp Corporation.

With the HG-01S, consumers can access recorded TV programs from a PC in MPEG-4 format. They can use a mobile phone, PC or even email to record programs or check listings of TV shows.Consumers can transfer digital images to the HG-01S server directly from a memory card or via a mobile phone. The device also functions as a Web-based photo album. According to Sharp, another feature that distinguishes the HG-01S from other home platforms is a built-in Web server, which along with networking functionality allows users to view recorded video even onremote computers via the Internet.

Sharps HG-01S comes with 120GB of hard disk space and can record the video of 115 hours (max). It offers secure networking, 802.11b compliant wireless networking, and broadband Internet access via FTTH, ADSL, and CATV, while also providing many TV set-top box features. Because of its scalable hardware and VPN functionality with 128-bit authentication, this device can be used as a Web server or a file server shared by multiple users, and is protected against any unauthorized access from outside. The HG-01S can also be configured as a wireless access point to provide services throughout the home.

We are delighted that we could help Sharp create this new generation of home server, said Hitoshi Arima, vice president, Sales in Japan, MontaVista Software, Inc. MontaVista Software has seen strong momentum in the consumer electronics market and we continue to support our customers by enabling their rapid product development and deployment while reducing total development costs, with high standards of reliability and performance.
