Annette Oevermann writes: MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution today announced that MontaVista(tm) Linux® Professional Edition 2.1 will support the SiByte(tm) BCM1250 processor from Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM).

“MontaVista Linux is one of the most widely used commercial embedded Linux development platforms in the telecommunications industry today,” said Krishna Anne, strategic marketing manager of Broadcom?s Broadband Processor Business Unit. “Through the integration of the BCM1250 and MontaVista Linux we can provide OEMs with a solution that is cost-effective and allows them quick time-to-market for their products.”

The BCM1250 is the first product in Broadcom’s SiByte family of high performance, low power, and highly integrated processors. The BCM1250 may be used in both control plane and data plane applications across the Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Earlier this year the BCM1250 received In-Stat/MDR?s Microprocessor Report 2001 Analysts? Choice Award in the Best High-Performance Embedded Processor category.

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition has been optimized for the Broadcom BCM91250A evaluation platform. The BCM1250 is unique among embedded high-integration processors with its MIPS®-based dual-CPU architecture. The MontaVista Linux kernel fully supports BCM1250’s Symmetric Multi Processing (SMP) operation. It multiplies throughput and offers swift, deterministic response to real-time events to help developers gain maximum performance from this advanced SMP design. MontaVista Linux for the BCM1250 supports a range of standard I/O interfaces and 11 cross development hosts. It also provides all the significant features of MontaVista Linux Professional Edition, such as the Preemptible Kernel, Real-time Scheduler, Target Configuration Tool (TCT) and Library Optimizer Tool (LOT).

“This partnership gives network OEMs the tools they need to architect solutions that take advantage of ever increasing processing power and bandwidth,” said John Nielson, director of business development for MIPS architecture at MontaVista Software. “At the same time, it provides the scalability and cost efficiencies that are essential to telecommunications equipment manufacturers in this difficult economic environment.”

About the Broadcom BCM1250 Processor

The BCM1250 is an intelligent chip multiprocessor system (CMP) that consists of two MIPS64 CPU cores, each scalable from 600 Megahertz (MHz) to 1 Gigahertz (GHz), with a 512k L2 cache, a dual-channel DDR memory controller and high-speed I/O.
